Did You Know

  • Cheshire Cheese is the UK's biggest selling crumbly cheese with sales of around 6500 tonnes per year
  • Cheshire cheese typically has between one third and one half of the salt content of Feta
  • Appleby’s remain the last Cheshire cheese makers to use a traditional recipe, open vats and to calico bind their cheese.
  • Coloured Cheshire is dyed using the natural vegetable extract Annatto – the same vegetable dye as used in Red Leicester
  • Cheshire is considered to be the oldest British cheese, it is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086) and probably dates back even further to Roman times
  • In the 1920's there were approximately 1200 farms producing farmhouse Cheshire cheese. Today Appleby’s of Hawkstone is the last hand-made, cloth bound Cheshire to survive.
